Posted by Michael Snyder on July 19, 2018 09:03:13 The bakery chain, which sells the likes of cookies, cakes, and pastries, is not a particularly popular brand in the U.S., but when the news of its impending demise broke last week, many of its customers began to voice their discontent.
Now, it seems like the business may have a new home in a new company.
A new company has taken over the bakery chain’s parent company, Kebab Shop, and is now called The Bakery Company, a division of the company.
The Bak, which is owned by a group of individuals who are not connected to KebarShop, claims to be a family owned company that has been “growing exponentially” in the last few years, with its website claiming it’s “the only family owned bakery in the country.”
Its first store opened in September of 2017, and it has since expanded to about 150 locations nationwide, according to the company’s official website.
Its owners, including its CEO, Scott Clements, and his wife, Jessica, claim they have been running The Bak in the neighborhood for more than five years, though they haven’t provided any specifics on when or how they plan to move forward.
The bakery, which has more than 300 stores across the country, has also been plagued by poor customer service and a variety of health and safety concerns, including mold and bacteria, according an investigation by Eater.
In 2016, the Food and Drug Administration warned that KebbShop was in “serious jeopardy” and urged customers to take steps to avoid food-borne illness.
The company did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.
The first batch of products sold on the bakery’s website are currently in the process of being processed, but Clements said the company had “many more to come” for its customers.
The newly created company is set to open its first store in San Diego this year, and plans to open a second location in Portland, Oregon.
Clements told Eater that his company has plans to expand in the next year and a half.
It’s unclear whether The Bak’s new owners plan to continue its relationship with Kebbshop or simply start a new brand.
Celsus, who is known for his own bakeries, said that he plans to stay with the company for the time being.
“I’ve been working here for so long, I’m going to be here forever,” he said.
